Summary of the Lesson I Am John’s Heart in Hindi & English
Introduction: The heart is the most important organ of our body. It is also the most laborious organ. We should know something about it. J.D. Ratcliff gives us outstanding knowledge about the heart narrated by of the heart itself. The heart tells us about its various aspects and work such anatomy, function, ailments and about precautions against them.
The Heart and its function: The heart of man is not beautiful. It weighs 340 grams and serves man sincerely. It hangs in the centre of the chest. It is shaped like a pear. It is 15 cm. long and about 10 cm. across. It has four chambers. Two pumps move the blood on: one into the lungs and the other back into the body.
Characteristics: The heart is hard-working. It is neither romantic nor delicate. Stronger than any other muscle in the body the heart works day and night for seventy years or more. But it takes rest too. It rests between beats for about half a second each time. And during sleep the beat slows down.
Man’s reactions about it: Man worries about the heart in wrong directions. Sometimes man thinks that his heart has skipped a beat but it is wrong. At other times he thinks that it is beating too fast; it is wrong too. When man runs, his heart runs too. It calms down as he becomes calm. The beats of the heart can be slowed down by massaging behind the ears. If man sits down to work after a heavy meal and feels a pain in his chest, he thinks that his heart is in trouble. It is wrong. He needn’t worry.
Nourishment: The heart gets nourishment from the blood. It does not extract nourishment from the blood passing through its chambers. It has its own two coronary arteries. These arteries feed it..
Heart attack: Trouble in these arteries can cause death. Fatty deposits begin to build up in the coronary arteries. Gradually they close the artery. If a clot is formed it may also close an artery suddenly. The artery then cannot feed the heart muscle. The muscle dies. And sometimes heart attacks are hereditary too.
Precautions: Something can be done to make the risk of heart attack less. The following things should be avoided over-weight, over-work, smoking, constant fretting, vigorous and sudden exercise, fatty food.
